EDUCATION AWARD FOR 2008
Previous Caledonian Society President, Ian Hind (left), presents the first-ever Educational Grant to Jessica Dill (front centre). The grant is awarded to a Bermudian student undergoing tertiary education at a recognised college or university in Scotland. Jessica has received the sum of $5,000 towards her education at The Edinburgh College of Art, where she will study for a degree in Architecture. Jessica was a student at the Bermuda High School for Girls, where she successfully completed the IB Diploma programme. The cheque was presented to Jessica on Monday, 18th August 2008, with her mother and father in attendance.
UPDATE - Here's a lovely note from Jessica:
Dear Mr. Hind,
First of all let me say, Thank you for giving me this opportunity to study overseas. The Scholarship you granted helped me pay for my tuition and some of my accommodation fees, so it allowed my parents to relax and not think about how to provide for me, for a while. For that I'm extremely grateful.
This first term has been amazing! Going to an art school to study architecture has been brilliant; combining the linear thinking of architecture with the creative thinking needed to make artwork.
This term we were meant to focus on materiality. As first year students they thought that it was very important that before we design anything we should know how the materials we would build with should look and feel like.
So for the first 4 or 5 weeks we were meant to make models of our own interpretation of 4 words: Ground, Wall, Frame and Canopy. We then combined our best ideas to design a simplistic "renga" platform. A "Renga" platform is typically a place where 12 or more chinese poets could congregate to write poetry.
Attached is 3 pictures of my final design for the simple platform. The general idea is 4 large, un-sheltered staircases which would lead to 4 platform, on which the poets could look out over a stretching landscape and feel inspired to write. Let me know what you think of it.
I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Sincerely,
Jessica Dill
